Anniversary Narrows Peak & Bowl of Fire

February 21st 2009

Doug Van Etten, Mary Hertert and I went to Anniversary Narrows Peak on Feb.21st Saturday. Doug and Mary just visited Las Vegas from Alaska and doesn't know much around this area, so I gave them an offer to lead this hike.
My plan was hike through the Anniversary Narrows then climb up to Ann.Narrows Peak. Then goes down to Bowl of Fire. The original idea was given from Fred Dexter. We hiked Narrows about 3 month ago. At that time he gave me an offer to show me the way to the Peak. Also he told me that I can go down Bowl of Fire from there too. Since then I wanted to try this one, but never had chance until this weekend.
The weather was great. There was some water in the canyon area, but was not an issue. After we left the dry wash and start heading to the Ann.Narrows Peak, we ran into the protective fragile microbiotic cryptogamic ground cover area. Those 'living soil' is severely damaged just by walking on it, so We tried to walk on the wash/rock as much as we could.
Climbing to Ann.Narrows Peak was not hard. Its short and only 700-800ft elevation gain, but steep and many loose rock. The last part to the Peak has couple of class 3 spots but easy one.
Descending route from suddle to the bottom of Bowl of Fire was very steep and many loose rocks/screes. But its all class 2 route. After we got the bottom of Bowl of Fire, we kept walking on the wash to avoid walk on the living soil.
It was about 10 mile loop hike and about 1,400 ft total elevation gain. All class 1-2 and couple of class 3 scramble spots.Took us 6 hours with moderate/slow pace.
