Hidden Forest Cabin and Hayford Peak Backpacking trip

January 16-17th 2010

Kenny and I had decided to go and check the Hidden Forest Cabin. Since both of us are Site Steward of that Cabin, we have to check it every quarterly.
I called couple of friend to join us. Both hikers (Ron and Paul) are strong and experienced Winter Backpacker.

On Saturday morning, we met at Kenny's house. Kenny made pancake for us.
After we ate breakfast, we headed to Deadman Canyon. Its a long dart road drive. Thanks for driving Ron!!

Even it was middle of January, there was no snow at the trailhead. I saw some snowfall on couple days ago, but it had melted very quickly.
For first couple miles, we hiked on the gravel rock with heavy alpine boots. Since we are going to Winter Backpacking, most of our backpack weights 40-60 lbs.
Snow appeared on the trail around 7,000 ft. But, its not deep and we kept hiking without snowshoes. When we getting closer to the cabin, the snow getting deeper. Even though, it never goes deeper than 18 inchs and we could hike without snowshoes since trail was already broken. It took us about 3.5 hours to get to the Cabin.
Kenny and I took some tree sample near the cabin. Kenny take it back for estimating the age of the Cabin. The Wire Grass Spring had plenty of water and it was not frozen.
3 of us (Paul, Ron and I) set up the tent out side of Cabin. Kenny decided to sleep in the Cabin. My 4 season tent worked fine at night. It was under 30 degrees at night. Maybe around 25 degrees.

Next Morning, I woke up little after 6AM and started fire. After we got breakfast, we went to Hayford Peak. We took nomal route to the Peak that is on the South East face of the Ridge. So, most of the snow had melted and we could hike without snowshoes easily. It was actually bit disappointment for us, since we wanted to snowshoeing and carried it all the way up. I used it only for short sections but other 3 hikers didn't.
It took us about 2.5 hours to get to the Peak. After we spent 20 minutes at the paek, we headed back down to the cabin and made it in 2 hours.

After we took a break at the Cabin, we broke the tent and packed up. Ron and I left there bit earlier than other 2.
I made it back to the car in 1 hour 35 minutes that is exactly same pace when I did this last time with lighter backpack.
