Hidden Forest Cabin& Sheep Peak Backpacking

September 2nd-4th 2012

It was supposed to be an easy overnight backpacking trip. Weatherforcast looked good and temperature at cabin is about 70.
I just packed Bivy Sack, 40 degree sleeping bag, sleeping pad, water filter, cooking tools and 3 meals in my 40 litter backpack.
Aramo Road was not a good condition. For last few weeks, monsoon rain washed the road and made a 5 inches dip everywhere. It took me extra 30 minutes drive to the trailhead.
I started hiking around 2PM. The temperature was warm and got sweat a lot. Deadman canyon doesn't get much wind, but it gets cooler after I passed around 7,500 ft of elevation. It took me 1 hour 49 minutes to get the Hidden Forest Cabin.
There were nobody at the Cabin. The water comes out from the pipe in front of the cabin as last time. Lots of birds came and drink/play with spring water while I was taking dinner at the table.

The next morning, I had decided to go Sheep peak. Normaly I climb the Hayford Peak or check the F-15 Crash site near the cabin, but I wanted to do something different this time. I have never been to Sheep peak from Cabin before.
It was about 6 miles to the Sheep peak and took me about 4 hours. I found TB-25L WWII bomber crash site near the peak.
It took me another 6.4 miles to get back to the car. There were so many cliff band inbetween peak and trailhead. And had to many class 3 scramble up and down. It was a bad route choice.

I got back to the car around 5PM and found my car battery was dead. There were no other car at the trailhead. Also there were no cell service too. I just started hiking down the road to make a call for help. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it even 1.9 miles of hike. Thus, I gave up and hikded back to the car around 7:30PM.
After a short break, I just got all the water and sleeping bag in my backpack and started hiking toward Corn Creek Ranger Station. Instead of hiking down the road, I hiked across the desert directry towards Corn Creek. My GPS said its about 13.9 mile. If I follow the road it goes up 17 miles.
But, it was a big mistake. There were so many bushes/cactus to dodge, also there were so many dry wash to hike down and up. I just wasted another hour and calories. Thus, I changed my plan and take a Cow Camp road down and back to the Alamo Road. I was so exhausted and took a nap for 2 hours at the Junction of Cow Camp/Alamo Rd.
I still had more than 8 miles to the Corn Creek from there. Good things was the temperature getting cool and it was nearly full moon. I had head lump, but I didn't have to use it. I started hiking again around 1:30AM. Its a long way, but had enough time until it gets warm. I reached to the Ranger station at 7AM and saw the sign says '9:30AM Open'. In couple of minutes, I found one car is driving into the ranger's residential area. So, I had decided to ask them for help.
There were 3 rangers. Fortunately couple of them knew me since I am the volunteer of DNWR. They invited me to the station and gave me a drink. After that, they gave me a ride back to the trailhead. My car started in a second after jump start.
According to my GPS, the total milege ends up 34.5 mile. (plus 5.2 mile on first day)
