The McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II is an US Air Force version of all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed for the US Navy.

This F-4E (#67-0318) belonged to 57th Fighter Weapons Wing, Nellis AFB.

On September 27, 1971, an Air Combat Maneuvering training mission consisting of four defending and two attacking F-4E aircraft of the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing was scheduled.
During the flight, two of the defending flight aircraft (FRESCO) collided in the mid-air.

FRESCO 1 (#68-0492), having bottmed out of his diving turn, was returning to the engagement.
As FRESCO 4 (#67-0318) rolled out in a left turn behind attacking (LONELY) flight, FRESCO 1 zoomed up and struck the underside of FRESCO 4.
FRESCO 4 lost its tail section and left wing and FRESCO 1 lost its right wing and fuselage forward of the aft cockpit
The wreckage of both aircraft was scattered over mountainous and rocky terrain.

Both aircrew memebers of FRESCO 1 were ejected clear of the aircraft at the time of the collision, but the pilot capt.Stephen Deichelmann was fatally injured even his parachute deployed and made a normal descent.

Following the collision, FRESCO 4 entered an invereted spin.
The pilot attempted to recover control of the aircraft without success.
